FTL travel is so far off that stories about it are factually closer to the Lord of the Rings than 2001. There are a lot of imaginative and relatively unexplored stories about the first few hundred years of space exploration will look like that should also be told. What do you think a good (near-term) realistic sci-fi story would look like?
