I had the sad duty of helping a friend’s family member clear out her apartment after she passed away. As like most of us, if not all, she was an avid sci-fi collector. She collected magazines, comic books, plates, patches, books, posters and autographs. What bothered me the most was the relative’s cold attitude towards my friend’s collection or as they referred to as “junk”. This Junk was her life but to them it headed to the dumpster, I was able to save some items but not all since they threw many collectible things away prior to me helping them. My friend lived alone but the most disappointing thing, she never did a Will and because of this most her things are now gone. Please do not let this happen to you, here is some advice:

1. Do a Will-Attach a section listing where you want your things to go to, if it’s not on paper..it won’t get done.

2. Keep an inventory of your collection, copy it to a disk and give it to a family member/friend or both. This way they know what you have, update it every 3-4 months as you collect things.

I was totally disgusted as to the handling of her collection that had taken her 20+ years to collect. Unfortunately with her not having a Will, her family was responsible for handling her affairs. Many of us do not think of doing Wills but to protect your collection, it would be advisable. Thank you for taking the time to read this post, I hope many will take this advice to heart.
