Article: The Sterility Factor of Sci-Fi Series

For those few true fans of Star Trek TOS or BSG…

Ironically, it is the fans of the Sci-Fi series that clog the arteries of original story line and excitement that was experienced back in 1967 or 1978. As long as there are conventions and those who write petitions as to the validity of a television show, there will be no true enjoyment. Watching ST - NG, DS9, Voyager (a.k.a. Lost in Space) and now Enterprise is more like reading a stale history book than going on a new adventure. We live in different times. Some say the “Age of political correctness”. Can you imagine writing or directing a movie or mini-series where lawyers look over your shoulder to make certain you will not offend a fan with abnormal or out of character behavior? It is a shame we cannot paint on a fresh canvas rather than by numbers. We thirst for the fresh experience of TOS, be it ST or BSG but are spoon fed “cook book, pre-programmed” night time soap opera dribble. Who do we have to blame? Our self’s, for being too GD critical. Enterprise could have been a fresh start. However, they played it safe and gave us what they thought we wanted, no surprises. BSG mini-series took a few chances but still had that ST DS9 wanna be or better yet that short lived series about space fighter pilots (Can’t remember title). One final point. ST TOS was exciting for me because…Story was #1, character development was secondary. They got into trouble, kicked ass or talked it to death, spent 30 seconds reviewing the moral of the story and ended with credits. Today, character development and interaction is SO primary, the plot or story is written only to serve the characters….sterile and boring!
